Fair play to the old place mind

I am a former pupil of Brampton Manor, good school with good teachers, when I was there between September 1973-May 1978

I was there from ‘88 to‘93 and you would have been lucky if 41 people got a-c gcse grades
It was as if they waited till my year left then they started doing the place up.
Had a lot of funding the last few years though. It’s unrecognisable compared to when I went there.

I was at senior school 78-83. My School was broken into 3 locations 10 classes 30 to 35 in each class x 5 years around 1500 kids.

1 out 2 out of 300 in my year may have gone to university, Certainly, no one I knew or know

My experience of London comprehensive schooling in the 80s was very educational.

For example, I’d sooner do time at HMP than vote Labour.

I went there from 93-98. Shit rugby teams but always had very good football teams.
Half decent school whilst I was there...if you wanted to learn. If you didn't, the teachers basically washed their hands of you.
Looked to be going even further downhill after I have left but then wholesale cosmetic changes obviously brought about academic ones too.
Didn't it change to a college or something?

Not knocking their achievement but it is not exactly a regular state school, or at least the 6th form isn't. Looking for top performers and has a very high entry criteria. It would be more interesting (and a better measure of the success of the school as a whole) to know how many kids from the 41 that made it to Oxbridge did their GSCEs at Brampton, or indeed how many Brampton kids started there and made it into their own school's 6th form. It is virtually a grammar school in all but name at sixth form level.

Didn't this school used to be called South East Ham secondary school.
If so I was there between 1962-66.
Was brand new then and a good school with excellent sports facilities

You would’ve been in the same year as my brother.
The best football team they had was the year below me with lee hodges in.
Won pretty much everything

It has had a pretty bad reputation in the early 90s

I went to school with a couple of Muslim brothers who moved from Brampton Manor to my school in Ilford. Both of them ended up getting done for terrorist related offences after leaving

Probably one of the best bits of news I've seen in a while

Re: Brampton Manor.London state school secures 41 Oxbridge offers
Went to Langdon Comp in East Ham myself which was getting increasing full of Asians by the late 70's and with their much higher birth rates coupled with white flight to Essex is probably 90% plus second / third generation immigrants now... and the Indian families in particular have a much more driven expectation for their kids education than most. Westcliff grammar for instance is taking in pupils from as far away as Hornchurch , mostly Indian kids , because they've passed the 11 plus exams with flying colours and are outperforming the kids from local schools around Southend who are ending up in the local comps. Which must be annoying for anyone who bought a house locally to get in the catchment area or the best school for miles around. White English kids including mine are wasting hours on xBox or Instagram for hours whilst these kids have their noses buried in a maths book , I suppose you can't complain when they're getting there on merit.

As far as Brampton is concerned I believe that a certain Mr A. Swallow came through that school and he turned out to be a great 'leader of men ' didnt he ?

True that South Woodhammer.... few years back when my daughter was toying with grammar school we took her to open evenings at both Southend and Westcliff High.... was amazing the amount of ethnic families there at the open nights... I think everyone's parents was either a doctor or an IT contractor... loads do the daily commute down the line to the coast.

Yep, great team that was. Hodgey is a good mate too. What a player he was by the way. 100x the player Lampard was but knackered knees and ankles and not as much dedication as Lampard saw their careers go in very different directions.

Re: Brampton Manor.London state school secures 41 Oxbridge offers
Yeah he was superb, even as a little kid at Brampton junior he was miles better than everyone else. Loved a piss up though.
Had a few decent players in that team though. Still see most of them regularly as well.
